OFFSET

OFFSET
  • Medium print runs
  • No origination costs
  • Short lead times
  • Recyclable films available

Traditional Offset printing has been available for many years within the printing industry typically used for paper / card printing. We at FMC Packaging use a hybrid offset and flexography central drum printer offering a unique performance and setup to the flexible packaging printing industry. Albeit similar to Flexo printing in terms of print quality, speeds, and setup. One of the major benefits to Offset is zero plate costs!

Advantages

  • No origination or Plate costs
  • consistent high image quality. Offset printing produces sharp and clean images and type more easily than, for example, letterpress printing; this is because the rubber blanket conforms to the texture of the printing surface.
  • Print on virtually any substrate including recyclable and compostable films.
  • quick and easy production of printing plates.
  • longer printing plate life.
  • Cost. Offset printing is the cheapest method for producing high quality prints in commercial printing quantities when compared with Flexographic printing
  • Solventless inks
  • The most economical and environmentally friendly print method available (arguably).

Disadvantages

  • Slightly inferior image quality compared to Gravure or Digital printing.
  • Propensity for anodized aluminium printing plates to become sensitive (due to chemical oxidation) and print in non-image–background areas when developed plates are not cared for properly.
  • Time and cost associated with producing plates and printing press setup. As a result, small quantity printing jobs may now use digital offset machines.
  • Only efficient for medium sized print runs approx. 500kg-1000kg MOQ.
  • Not widely available. Only 1 Offset press available limiting availability and increasing lead times.
